Darren HurlburtDarren Hurlburt, President & CEO
Darren's areas of responsibility include the oversight of the day-to-day operations of MES. As a member of executive management, Darren contributes to the strategic planning process of Maine Education Services. Darren is also responsible for ensuring compliance with financial reporting requirements for both MELA and MES. In addition, Darren serves as a member of the MELA Credit Committee. Prior to joining MES, Darren worked for seven years at Baker Newman & Noyes (formerly KPMG Peat Marwick), a public accounting firm located in Portland, Maine. Darren's former clients were concentrated mainly within the financial services and not-for-profit industries. Darren volunteered on the Board of the Portland Chapter of the American Red Cross from 1996 to 1999, serving in various capacities including Audit Committee Chair and a member of the Finance and Executive Committees, and is currently serving on the Board of Directors at the Sanford-Springvale YMCA.  Darren is a licensed CPA and received his BBA in accounting from James Madison University in 1993.

Kim BenjaminKim Benjamin, Vice President of Operations
As Vice President of Operations, Kim's responsibilities include management of the scholarship programs, loan portfolio servicing, marketing services, customer service, and loan origination functions. She focuses on using corporate technology to improve the quality of services and products administered by MES. Kim joined MES in 1994 and was instrumental in the development of the Customer Service Department. Kim has significant experience in areas such as loan servicing, underwriting, Federal and State loan program compliance, project management and acquisitions. Kim's other experiences include ten years in sales, customer service, and small office management. A graduate from the University of Southern Maine, Kim holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Outside of MES, Kim serves on the Junior Achievement of Midcoast Maine Board, is a Junior Achievement instructor, and serves as the Chair and Treasurer for her alumni class.
Kathryn DesmondKathryn Desmond, Finance Manager
As Manager, Kathryn’s responsibilities include direct supervision over the financial functions of MES. Her expertise with managing student loan revenue bonds along with budget management makes her an important asset to the management team. Since joining MES in 1995, Kathryn has implemented efficiencies to the workflow and quality control in the reconciliation of the loan and investment portfolios. Before coming to Maine, Kathryn managed a successful small business in California after spending 8 years with SmithKline Clinical Laboratories. Believing education is a lifelong journey; Kathryn continues to expand her professional development with accounting and business courses. Outside the office, Kathryn serves on the Finance Advisory Commitee for the Town of Bowdoinham and enjoys spending time with her husband and three dogs.
